Psilocybin Therapy Programs Expand in Oregon, Colorado, and New Mexico

At a glance

  • Oregon, Colorado, and New Mexico have legalized supervised psilocybin therapy
  • Over 15,000 people accessed legal psilocybin care by end of 2025
  • Session costs remain high and insurance coverage is limited

Three U.S. states have established regulated programs for supervised psilocybin therapy, marking a shift in access to psychedelic-assisted care. These programs are governed by state-level laws and regulations, with Oregon, Colorado, and New Mexico each implementing their own frameworks.

Oregon was the first state to legalize supervised psilocybin services in 2020, creating a system of licensed facilitators and service centers overseen by the Oregon Health Authority. Colorado followed in 2022 with a law permitting natural psychedelic use in licensed healing centers, and New Mexico enacted similar legislation in April 2025, introducing a supervised therapy program with licensing and oversight requirements.

By the end of 2025, more than 15,000 individuals had participated in legal psilocybin therapy through regulated programs in Oregon and Colorado. In Oregon, session prices typically range from $1,000 to $3,000 and are generally not covered by insurance. The state had 27 licensed service centers and over 300 facilitators by May 2024, but the number of centers and facilitators has declined due to various operational challenges.

Colorado’s psilocybin program has seen interest from prospective operators, with at least 15 healing center license applications and several applications for cultivation, manufacturing, and testing facilities as of March 2025. Boulder, Colorado, had at least three licensed healing centers open by late 2025, reflecting the ongoing rollout of the program.

What the numbers show

  • Oregon had 27 licensed service centers and over 300 facilitators by May 2024
  • Session costs in Oregon typically range from $1,000 to $3,000
  • Colorado received at least 15 healing center license applications by March 2025
  • More than 15,000 people accessed legal psilocybin care in Oregon and Colorado by end of 2025

Operational expenses and regulatory requirements have contributed to high session costs and limited access in Oregon. The state’s program has also encountered challenges such as complex regulations, local bans, and a reduction in the number of service centers and facilitators. In April 2025, Bendable Therapy in Oregon became the first to accept private insurance for psilocybin therapy, offering individual sessions at $3,800 and group sessions at $2,200.

Colorado’s regulatory framework includes substantial costs for facilitators, with training fees around $420, annual license fees of about $900, and facilitator training programs costing $10,000 or more. These expenses have influenced the pricing and accessibility of therapy sessions in the state.

To address affordability, Colorado healing centers have announced plans for sliding-scale pricing and discounts for veterans, Medicaid recipients, and low-income clients. Group sessions are also being offered to help reduce costs for participants.

New Mexico’s Medical Psilocybin Act, enacted in April 2025, established a supervised therapy program with provisions for licensing, oversight, and equity funding. This law positions New Mexico alongside Oregon and Colorado as states with regulated access to psilocybin-assisted services.
