Lego has announced the Smart Play platform, which centers on a new interactive Smart Brick, at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. The development introduces new technology to Lego’s product lineup and marks a shift in its approach to interactive play.
The Smart Brick, which maintains the dimensions of a standard 2×4 Lego piece, contains a computer chip, multiple sensors, a speaker, an LED array, and supports wireless charging. It is designed to communicate with Smart Tags and Smart Minifigures using near-field magnetic communication and can connect with other Smart Bricks through a Bluetooth-based mesh network called BrickNet.
According to information published by Lego, the Smart Brick includes a microphone for interactive features such as responding to blowing or clapping. The company stated that the brick does not include a camera or artificial intelligence and does not record audio. Wireless charging is enabled by a dedicated pad, and firmware updates can be delivered via a smartphone app, with a focus on durability for long-term use.
Lego described the Smart Play platform as its most significant evolution in its System-in-Play since the introduction of the Lego Minifigure in 1978. The company emphasized that the system does not require screens, apps, or a central hub, and aims to maintain hands-on, imaginative play.
