The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has announced updates to its Art + Technology Lab, introducing a biennial grant cycle and expanded programming beginning with the 2026 cycle. The changes are intended to support new projects that engage with emerging technologies and broaden opportunities for artists.
On February 23, 2026, LACMA published its latest Request for Proposals for the Art + Technology Lab, inviting artists to submit ideas for projects that incorporate evolving technological approaches. The Lab, relaunched in 2013, has provided support for 45 artist projects and hosted more than 121 public programs since its inception.
Starting with the 2026 cycle, the Lab will shift to a biennial schedule, selecting 3 to 5 recipients through an open call and including up to two invitational projects. This structure is designed to provide both financial awards and in-kind resources from the museum and its private partners.
Selected artists in the upcoming cycle will be eligible for grants of up to $50,000. In addition to funding, recipients will receive support services from LACMA and collaborating organizations. The application deadline for the 2026 grant is set for April 22, 2026, at 11:59 pm Pacific Time.
What the numbers show
- 45 artist projects have been supported by the Lab since 2013
- Over 121 public programs have been hosted by the Lab
- Up to $50,000 is available per selected project in the 2026 cycle
- Applications are due by April 22, 2026
- 3–5 open-call recipients and up to 2 invitational projects will be chosen
The Lab’s updated framework will also introduce new events to highlight completed projects and research. Beginning in 2027, a biennial Symposium will feature artist demonstrations, performances, talks, and presentations. In 2028, a Demo Day will be launched to showcase finished projects alongside public programs focused on new artistic strategies.
In February 2026, LACMA released a publication marking the 10-year anniversary of the Art + Technology Lab. The publication includes essays, thematic overviews, and highlights from all 45 previous grant recipients, providing a retrospective on the Lab’s impact over its first decade.
The Art + Technology Lab is presented by Hyundai Motor Company and supported by Snap Inc. and Anthropic. These partnerships form part of a long-term collaboration between Hyundai Motor Company and LACMA, enabling the museum to offer resources and opportunities to artists working at the intersection of art and technology.
Through these program changes, LACMA aims to continue its support for artists exploring innovative uses of technology. The expanded schedule and new events are intended to foster collaboration and public engagement with technological art practices.
