GCSE Results to Be Available on Education Record App From 2026

At a glance

  • All Year 11 students in England will access GCSE results via app from summer 2026
  • The Education Record app was piloted in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands
  • The Department for Education estimates up to £30 million annual savings

The Department for Education announced that starting in summer 2026, Year 11 students in England will be able to view their GCSE results using a mobile application called the Education Record. This development is part of a broader effort to modernise exam record management and reduce administrative costs for schools and colleges.

The Education Record app has previously undergone pilot testing in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, with earlier technical trials conducted in Oldham and Coventry. During the pilot phase, approximately 4,000 pupils at 29 schools accessed their GCSE results digitally, providing initial feedback on the system’s operation.

On results day, students will continue to attend school to receive their results in person from around 9 am, while the digital results will become available on the app later that morning, from about 11 am. The app will also display additional information, including whether a student needs to resit English or maths GCSEs, has special educational needs, or qualifies for free school meals.

The Department for Education stated that the Education Record app will be integrated with the GOV.UK Wallet. This integration will allow users to store their exam results and other credentials securely in a single digital location, supporting the government’s digital services strategy.

What the numbers show

  • The national rollout is estimated to save up to £30 million per year in administrative costs
  • About 4,000 pupils at 29 schools participated in the pilot last summer
  • The pilot programme cost an estimated £5.5 million over two years

Skills Minister Jacqui Smith said in a statement that the app is intended to provide young people with instant access to their results and to reduce the paperwork burden on teachers and college staff. The Department for Education highlighted the potential for the app to streamline the process of sharing exam outcomes and related student information.

The app’s features are designed to support both students and educational institutions by centralising key data. Information about resit requirements, special educational needs, and eligibility for free school meals will be available alongside exam results, making it easier for students and staff to access relevant details.

The Department for Education estimated that the national rollout of the Education Record app could result in substantial annual savings for schools and colleges. The department said that these savings would come from reduced administrative work related to exam result distribution and record-keeping.

The pilot phase, which involved a limited number of schools and students, provided the basis for the planned national rollout. The department confirmed that the pilot cost £5.5 million over two years, and the feedback from participating schools contributed to the app’s development ahead of the wider launch.
